What's Really Included in a Fully Staffed St Barth Villa
"Staffed" means five different things here. The real ladder of villa service, what each level costs, and the seven questions to ask.
"Fully staffed" is not a standard — it is a marketing word
In Saint-Barthélemy the phrase covers everything from a housekeeper who comes three mornings a week to a live-in brigade of six. There is no local certification, no star rating, no obligation to define it. Two villas at the same weekly rate can offer completely different levels of service, and the listing will describe both with the same two words. What follows is the actual ladder, as it exists on the island.
The five real levels of villa service
Level one, the default in nearly every rental: housekeeping three to six mornings a week, linen change mid-stay, pool and garden maintenance. Level two adds a daily housekeeper present through the morning and a caretaker on call. Level three adds a chef, usually on a per-service basis rather than resident. Level four is genuinely staffed: resident house manager, daily housekeeping, chef, and a driver or dedicated vehicle. Level five, rare and reserved for the island's largest estates, adds butler service, a second chef or commis, and a security presence. The great majority of villas marketed as staffed sit at levels one and two.
What is almost always included, whatever the level
Arrival cleaning and departure cleaning. Bed and bath linen, changed at least once mid-week. Pool treatment and garden care, generally early morning. Utilities, wifi and air conditioning in the bedrooms. A welcome basket of some description. Basic concierge access through the rental agency for restaurant reservations. This is the floor, and it is the same at 15,000 € and at 60,000 € a week.
What is almost never included, and costs extra
The <a href="/services/private-chef-st-barts/">chef</a> and all provisioning. The car — most villas include none, and a vehicle is not optional on this island. <a href="/services/airport-transfers-st-barts/">Airport transfers</a> and luggage handling. Boat days, whether a Fourchue crossing or a Colombier picnic. Babysitting, spa treatments, in-villa massage. Laundry beyond linen. Late checkout, extra cleanings, and any service on 25 December or 1 January. The seven questions that reveal the truth
How many staff hours per day, and at what times exactly? Is the housekeeper present continuously or only until noon? Is the chef resident or booked per service, and who pays for provisioning? Is a vehicle included, and for how many drivers? Who answers the phone at 9pm when the generator trips? Are transfers included on both arrival and departure? And which of these change during the 15 December to 5 January period? Any agency that answers all seven precisely and in writing is worth trusting. One that answers vaguely is telling you something too.
The alternative: one quote, everything inside
The structural problem with St Barts is that a stay is assembled from five or six independent suppliers — villa, chef, car, boat, transfers, concierge — each with its own contract, its own invoice and its own idea of what it owes you. Nobody owns the whole. Questions
Does a fully staffed villa in St Barts include a chef?
Usually not by default. Most villas marketed as staffed include housekeeping, pool and garden care only. A chef is a separate booking in the large majority of cases, and provisioning is separate again.
Is a car included with a St Barts villa rental?
Rarely. Most villas include no vehicle, and a car is essential here — the island has no meaningful public transport and taxi supply is thin at night. Budget 400 to 900 € a week, considerably more in high season.
What is the difference between a staffed villa and a hotel suite in St Barts?
A hotel gives you consistency, restaurants and a concierge desk. A properly staffed villa gives you privacy, space and a table of your own — but only if the staffing is real. At level one or two, you have a beautiful house with a cleaner, not a serviced residence.
How much should I add to a villa rate for services?
Between 25 and 45 percent of the weekly villa rate once chef, provisioning, car, transfers and a boat day are added. Below 25 percent, something has been left out of your planning.
